Buffalo NY Fishing Report – Observations from 07/22/2024 – 07/28/2024

Here’s our latest Buffalo NY fishing report:  Another awesome week for the books, my friends.  I had the privilege of spending time on the water with some new clients (including some young anglers) and some old friends. Aside from the heat, our time on the water was a blast.  Action has been good out there lately – so long as you start early to avoid getting cooked by the sun.  Now that I think about it, the water temperature is 78 degrees.  I’ve gotta start jumping in the lake to cool down.  Anyway, life’s been good folks…and I’m only a few days away from a big vacation.  Keep reading for more details.

Days on the water: 6

Who we fished with: friends/clients

Where we fishedLake Erie, Upper Niagara

What we caught:  smallmouth bass, walleye, freshwater drum

Tactics:  trolling worm harnesses, drifting bait

Detailed Reporting/Daily Observations

Weather Breakdown

07/22/2024 – Fished Lake Erie out of Buffalo, NY for bass and drum with Ryan, Chelsea, and Aiden (8years old).  It was a glassy day so we ended up pulling baits around the various rock piled in the area.  Once again, the short angler caught the biggest and most fish.  Good times with some great folks!

07/23/2024 – Fished Lake Erie out of Buffalo, NY for bass and drum with Larry, Ian, and Fin (8 years old).  I’ve been fishing with Larry and his son, Ian, for 5 years now.  Every outing is a blast.  This year, Larry decided it was time to get his younger son, Fin, involved.

It was a full day trip and Fin was engaged the entire time – morale stayed high, and he caught the biggest and the most fish by the end of the day.  It was funny though, his dad and brother kept catching bass while he couldn’t keep the drum off his hook.  By the end of the day, all he wanted to catch was a bass.  He made that happen on the last drift.  Awesome day!

07/24/2024 – Fished Lake Erie out of Buffalo, NY for bass and drum with Dale, Joanna, and Lennon (8 years old).  I don’t know if you noticed this, but this is 3 days in a row with 8-year-old kids.  I’m very happy to see parents getting their children involved in fishing.  8 is the perfect age to get them started if you haven’t already.

The forecast wasn’t right (shocker).  The wind/waves ended up being bigger than expected – but still very safe.  Lake Erie started off with 2’ waves and built to 3’ers later in the morning.  At first, Lennon was nervous, but it didn’t take long for her to enjoy the roller coaster ride while catching a ton of fish.

Oh yeah, the bass were CHOMPING in those waves.  Far more bass than drum on this trip.  Incredible session with some new friends!

07/25/2024 – Fished Lake Erie out of the Catt with the whisperer and the silent assassin.  In short, we got our limit before 11:00AM.  Lots of bigger fish too.  No pictures taken – blood lust and an insane bite kept our focus elsewhere.  At one point, all 6 rods were carrying fish.  By the time things settled down, it was carnage on the boat and the box was full of ‘eyes.

More than a handful of times now, I’ve mentioned that this is the first summer where I’ve committed most of my time targeting walleyes.  In years past, I would target them in mid-July when the big schools would park in front of Buffalo, NY for a couple weeks – that was it.  This year, I’ve been hunting them since mid-June and will continue to do so until the end of August/early September.  I have the whisperer to blame for that.  Well, him and because a handful of my colleagues have been poking me to go this route for years.

I have to say – I’m a little obsessed with walleyes.  I likely feel this way because of how new this is to me.  To this day, I’m a little anxious at the start of every walleye trip – my confidence is still a bit suppressed.  Being on the edge of a great humbling keeps it exciting for me.  From what I understand, this obsession might be the end of me.  I doubt it though – there’s so much to do and see in the fall that I’ll be happy to say goodbye to Lake Erie gold…until next season that is.

07/26/2024 – Took the day off and had the boat deep cleaned.  Shout out to Liam Kennedy Kennedy Auto Care – Mobile Car and Boat Detailing Services | Expert Care On-The-Go for, once again, making the Warrior look like new.

07/27/2024 – Fished a double on Lake Erie out of the Catt.  For the morning trip, Andy and his two sons, Drew and Nicholas, wanted an opportunity to catch their first walleye.  After filling the box with Lake Erie gold, we converted to jigging.  Drum and bass were on the feed.

For the afternoon trip, Rob, his son Grayson, and I started off targeting walleyes.  It was very slow – good screen the entire time but few chewed.  So, to bend some rods for a bit, we pushed in shallow and jigged for drum and whatever else would bite.  We closed the evening by trolling for walleyes again – the bite picked up.

07/28/2024 – Fished a half day/morning trip with Mark, Mike, and Mike Jr. for walleyes out of the Catt.  Not sure why, but it was a little slower than it has been lately.  For us that is.  I’m scratching my head – I probably should’ve started earlier.

Seasonal Assessment/General Observations

On the Conditions

Hopefully the daily play-by-play above provided enough info for the week.  It was 88 when I got off the water today and I’m absolutely smoked.  Bottom line, the fishing is good, folks.

Buffalo NY Fishing Report – Forecast for 07/29/2024 – 08/04/2024

Weather Breakdown

    Forecast Commentary

Once again, the forecast for this upcoming week looks excellent.  Wind and a little bit of rain will make an appearance around mid-week, but nothing problematic.  Every day will be fishable.

I’m booked Monday – Wednesday.  After that, we’re off to the United Kingdom for a couple of weeks.  My wife’s mother is from there, so there are some relatives to visit and, from what I hear, there’s some historical stuff to see.  My buddy Jay (my Guyana brother) lives there so we’ll link up and do some fishing.  Stand by for the trip report.

Stay healthy my friends – mentally and physically,

    Ryan
